Stuck on you
A serious music fan, Patrick Roy and his Walkman were literally joined at the hip during the 1986 Stanley Cup Playoffs. In the dressing room, on the team bus, and, who knows, maybe even under his mask, one could rest assured that Roy was always wearing his trusty earphones. That is, until fellow rookie Claude Lemieux arrived on the scene.

“To get himself ready and in the zone before a game, Patrick always had his earphones on,” recalled Lemieux. “Just before Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Flames, Patrick received a brand new Walkman. That’s when I decided to challenge him.”

With the Habs leading the best-of-seven series, 2-1, over the Flames, Lemieux flashed some of the confidence that would come to characterize his brilliant career by calling out St. Patrick before the Habs rookies took to the Forum ice on May 22, 1986.

“I told him that I was going to score the winning goal that night, and that he was going to give me his Walkman,” recalled Lemieux of his boast to that season’s eventual Conn Smythe Trophy winner. “He gladly accepted my challenge, so that meant it was up to me to be true to my word.”

After two periods, the game was tied 0-0. With both the Habs and Flames on edge following a 10-minute brawl, Lemieux’s prediction came true. At the 11:10 mark of the third period, the forward opened the scoring by beating the Flames’ Mike Vernon for his 10th goal of the playoffs.

Armed with a 1-0 lead, Roy did his part by slamming the door on his way to earning a shutout and handing his teammate a winning bet.

Two days later, the Habs’ rookies raised the Stanley Cup after downing the Flames, 5-3, in Game 5 at Calgary’s Saddledome.

“Had I known that Patrick would go on to have such an amazing career, I would have made sure to keep the Walkman,” admitted Lemieux. “I’m pretty sure it would be worth a fortune today.”
