Where are they now? Claude Larose

Where are they now? Claude Larose
The Canadiens didn’t pile up 100 years of history without the blood, sweat and tears of the over 750 players to have ever worn the uniform. From the likes of Donald Audette to Zarley Zalapski, there are former Habs scattered all over the world. Although many hardcore Canadiens fans can rattle off the career accomplishments of hundreds of their old heroes, the question remains: what are these guys up to today? On the hot seat today: Claude Larose.

Where do you live now?
I moved to Florida in a little nook called Coconut Creek. I’ve been living here for 12 years, so it’s home now.  I try to make it back to Canada every summer since my family still lives in the Montreal and Ottawa areas.

What are you up to these days?
I’m working as a pro scout for the Carolina Hurricanes; I’m responsible for the south-south-eastern United States. Just taking it one year at a time these days, though. As long as my health is still good and I still enjoy what I’m doing, I plan to keep working as long as I can.

How often do you lace up the skates per year?
A big zero… it’s been about seven years since I’ve been on the ice.

Are you still in touch with your former teammates?
The last time I was in Montreal, I saw Guy Lapointe. I’ve kept in touch with a lot of the guys who are still working in hockey, like Jacques Laperriere, Jacques Lemaire and Jacques Caron. Oh, and Peter Mahovlich, who’s working for Atlanta these days.  I usually only see my old teammates and colleagues when I’m traveling and on the road.

How many Canadiens games do you watch each season?
All of them!  Unless there’s something I really can’t reschedule, I’ll make sure to work around it so I can check out every game during the year.  It has been a really long time since I’ve watched a game at the Bell Centre, though. It’s a little too cold up north for my liking – the farthest I go in that direction nowadays is Philadelphia.

What’s your most valued souvenir or piece of memorabilia that you’ve held on to since your playing days?
You know, I never got my Canadiens jersey. I think in that time, the guys in the organization must have been hiding our actual jerseys, because the only one they let me have was a brand new sweater that I had never worn.  Back then, we didn’t really think to hang onto stuff or collect memorabilia. The young guys are way more aware of that now and a lot more likely to collect stuff like that.

Where do you keep your Stanley Cup ring?
Of the six rings I won, I’ve only kept one of them.  The only one I have is the last one I received when Carolina won the Cup in 2006. I wear it everywhere I go.  The ones I won as a player with the Canadiens, I’ve either given to my son or I’ve sold.
