Where are they now? Marc Tardif
The Canadiens didn’t pile up 100 years of history without the blood, sweatand tears of the over 750 players to have ever worn the uniform. From the likes of Donald Audette to Zarley Zalapski, there are former Habs scattered all over the world. Although many hardcore Canadiens fans can rattle off the career accomplishments of hundreds of their old heroes, the question remains: what are these guys up to today? Today’s guest: Marc Tardif

Where do you live now?

I’ve been living in Quebec City since December 8, 1974. I remember the exact date because it was that same day that I was traded to the Nordiques, who were then a part of the World Hockey Association.

What are you doing now?
I’ve owned a Toyota dealership for the last 12 years and a Kia dealership for the last 7 years.

How many times per year do you lace up the skates?
Never! When I retired in 1983, I decided I’d had enough. I had been playing since I was about 5 or 6, so I decided to move on. You have to be in shape to play, even if it’s just for a friendly game. In other words, when I “hung up my skates,” I really hung them up.

Have you kept in touch with any former teammates?
Given that I live in Quebec, I’m still in touch with a lot of former Nordiques teammates.  I’m a member of the Alumni tour committee with Pierre Lacroix, Alain Côté and Dave Pichette.  I also still speak to Michel Goulet and Rejean Houle.

How many Canadiens games do you watch per season?
I’ll watch from time to time.  If I’m home and there’s a game, I’ll likely turn it on.

When was the last time you were in Montreal to watch a game?
It’s been about a year or two since I’ve been to a game at the Bell Centre. Before that, I went a few times.  At the start of the season, management invites us to the first preseason game, so I go when I’m available.

Who is your favorite player on the current roster?
I can’t say that I watch the games intently enough to be able to have a favorite.  But, if I did have to choose one, I’d go with Maxim Lapierre, who played well this past season. As for defense, Andrei Markov is really good back there.

Of all you’ve collected and still have from your years with the Canadiens, what’s your favorite?
Aside from my two rings, I didn’t keep anything from that time. I was just starting out and when you’re at that stage of your career, you’re young and you think your career will last forever. You feel as though it’s the others that get older so you aren’t really interested in keeping souvenirs.

Where do you keep your Stanley Cup rings?
I keep them in my house with my watches, among other things. I’m not one who really wears any jewelry, whether it’s a watch, a necklace…or a ring.
