Where are they now? Mike Lalor
FIND OUT WHAT MIKE LALOR IS DOING THESE DAYS.
MONTREAL | March 6th, 2009
The Canadiens didn’t pile up 100 years of history without the blood, sweat and tears of the over 750 players to have ever worn the uniform. From the likes of Donald Audette to Zarley Zalapski, there are former Habs scattered all over the world. Although many hardcore Canadiens fans can rattle off the career accomplishments of hundreds of their old heroes, the question remains: what are these guys up to today? Today’s guest: Mike Lalor.
Where do you live now?
Needham, MA, which is just outside of Boston.
What are you doing now?
I work as a personal trainer at Teammates Fitness, a gym that I co-own with my wife Leanne. In my spare time, I coach the South Shore Kings of the Eastern Junior Hockey League.
I also actively follow my sons who both play hockey for their school teams. My oldest, Jordan, is a freshman at Bowdoin College, a Division III school in Maine. My youngest, Mac, is a senior in high school. Upon graduation, he will likely play a few years of junior hockey before playing in college.
How many times per year do you lace up the skates?
After I first retired, I played in pick-up leagues quite regularly but now due to my coaching commitments, I only have time to play in a charity game here and there.
Are you still in touch with any former teammates?
It’s difficult to see former teammates on a regular basis as we’re all still very busy but I try to catch up with the guys when they pass through Boston. With that said, I keep in touch with Steve Rooney, whose son plays in the EJHL. I saw Claude Lemieux a few times recently when he was preparing to make his NHL comeback. I also see Petr Svoboda every now and then.
How many Canadiens games do you watch per year?
I watch a few games every year. They’re usually the Boston vs. Montreal games that are shown on local TV.
When was the last time you were in Montreal to watch a game?
I was in town on February 23, 2008 when I attended Bob Gainey’s jersey retirement.
Who is your favorite player on the current roster?
I’ve always loved the way Alex Kovalev plays the game. He’s hugely skilled and looked phenomenal in the 2008 Playoffs.
What is your favorite piece of Canadiens memorabilia that you own?
The miniature replicas of the Prince of Wales trophy and the Stanley Cup that we were given after winning the Cup in 1986.
Where do you keep your Stanley Cup ring?
I only ever wear my ring on special occasions like when I’m attending a community or minor hockey event.
