Where are they now? Mike McPhee
The Canadiens didn’t pile up 100 years of history without the blood, sweat and tears of the over 750 players to have ever worn the uniform. From the likes of Donald Audette to Zarley Zalapski, there are former Habs scattered all over the world. Although many hardcore Canadiens fans can rattle off the career accomplishments of hundreds of their old heroes, the question remains: what are these guys up to today? Today’s guest: Mike McPhee.

A gritty left winger who spent nine seasons with the Canadiens from 1983-84 to 1991-92, McPhee helped lead the Habs to the Stanley Cup in 1986. The Sydney, NS native who represented the Habs at the 1989 NHL All-Star Game has been a busy man since retiring from the game following the 1993-94 season. Find out for yourself!

Where do you live now?
I live just outside of Halifax.  I stayed in Dallas for a bit after I retired and then came back here in 1996.

What are you doing now?
I’m an investment advisor with National Bank Financial here in Halifax. I’ve been doing it for 11 years now; I offer advice to individuals on insurance and investments. I went back to school in Dallas and got my
MBA.  I had wanted to get into business and I just took the natural route.

How many times per year do you lace up the skates?
I used to go with my son but he’s 21 now, so I don’t get on the ice anymore.  I retired because there was bone-on-bone in my knee.  I had surgery last year to fix it and it happened to be right at the same time that Bob Gainey's jersey was being retired.  I was supposed to be there but that was the only time they could do the operation, so I ended up watching it on the 8” screen from my hospital room.

It was pretty neat to see.  I played with Bob for five years and we’ve kept in touch.

Are you still in touch with any former teammates?
It’s hard to stay in touch in Halifax.  Aside from Bob, I speak to Brian Skrudland from time to time and on  and off with Russ Courtnall.  I also run into guys sometimes at golf tournaments.

How many Canadiens games do you watch per year?
I watch all the playoff games and during the regular season, probably about one or two per month.

When was the last time you were in Montreal to watch a game?
I was there when Patrick Roy’s jersey was retired.
