Where are they now? Pete Mahovlich
FIND OUT WHAT THE FORMER HABS CENTERMAN IS DOING THESE DAYS.
MONTREAL | March 14th, 2009
The Canadiens didn’t pile up 100 years of history without the blood, sweat and tears of the over 750 players to have ever worn the uniform. From the likes of Donald Audette to Zarley Zalapski, there are former Habs scattered all over the world. Although many hardcore Canadiens fans can rattle off the career accomplishments of hundreds of their old heroes, the question remains: what are these guys up to today? Today’s guest: Pete Mahovlich.
Where do you live now?
Queensbury, NY
What are you doing now?
I am in charge of scouting the Northeast Division for the Atlanta Thrashers.
How many times per year do you lace up the skates?
The last time I played hockey was three years ago when I participated in a Fantasy Camp with Marcel Dionne. My knees were still sore a few months after the game, so I realized then that it was time for me to hang up my skates for good.
Are you still in touch with any former teammates?
Through my job I frequently cross paths with former teammates who also work in the NHL, such as Larry Robinson with New Jersey, Bob Gainey with Montreal, and Doug Risebrough with Minnesota. When I am in Montreal for a game, I always stop in to the Alumni Lounge to see everyone, so I often get to see Yvon Lambert, Jean Beliveau, and Henri Richard.
How many Canadiens games do you watch per year?
My job requires me to see quite a few games each season. As of February 23, I have seen the Canadiens nine times so far this season.
When was the last time you were in Montreal to watch a game?
I was in town to watch the Predators take on the Habs on January 15.
Who is your favorite player on the current roster?
With my job I can’t really share my opinion on a specific player, but Montreal has a very well-balanced team. They’ve also got lots of young talented players coming up through the ranks.
What is your favorite piece of Canadiens memorabilia that you own?
I never sold any of my Canadiens gear but I did pass most of it along to my kids. I love all of my possessions from the time I spent in Montreal because I loved the city, I loved the fans, I loved the people, I loved the coverage the team received, and I loved playing for such a wonderful organization. My most prized possession, though, is the small replica Stanley Cup I received after winning the Cup the first time in 1971.
Where do you keep your four Stanley Cup rings?
The team wasn’t given rings after we won the Cup in ‘71 but we received rings for the three subsequent Cup wins, so I gave a ring to each of my three kids.
