Where are they now? Steve Penney
The Canadiens didn’t pile up 100 years of history without the blood, sweatand tears of the over 750 players to have ever worn the uniform. From the likes of Donald Audette to Zarley Zalapski, there are former Habs scatteredall over the world. Although many hardcore Canadiens fans can rattle off the career accomplishments of hundreds of their old heroes, the question remains: what are these guys up to today? Today’s guest: Steve Penney.

Where do you live now?

I’m in St. Ferreol les Neiges, just at the base of Mont Saint-Anne.

What are you doing now?
I work for Optique Cerem.  We’re responsible for distributing eyeglass frames to opticians throughout the province of Quebec.

How many times per year do you lace up the skates?
I still play regularly, probably twice a week in a garage league.  But I don’t play nets anymore; I’m a defenseman these days.  The last time I strapped on my goalie equipment was at the outdoor Alumni game in Edmonton, just before the Heritage Classic game between the Oilers and Canadiens in 2003.

Are you still in touch with any former teammates?
The Alumni host a golf tournament every year so we see each other then.  I’m still pretty close with Lucien Deblois, too.  He’s a scout now so he’s busy, but we see each other as often as we can.

How many Canadiens games do you watch per year?
As many as I can.  My kids play hockey, so that takes up a lot of the evenings. If I’m at home and there’s a game on, though, I’ll definitely watch.

When was the last time you were at the Bell Centre for a game?
Last year during the playoffs.  I’d like to come more often, but I just don’t have the time.

Who is your favorite player on the current roster?
I don’t really have a specific favorite player these days. I like guys who work really hard like Maxim Lapierre. Sure it’s impressive whenever a guy scores two or three goals in a game, but it all comes down to hard work at the end of the day. And a Stanley Cup is only won as a team.

What is your favorite piece of Canadiens memorabilia that you own?
I kept a few team photos. I have the Molson Cup that I won. And I sold a few things to collectors.

Where do you keep your Stanley Cup ring?
I actually don’t have it anymore. It was stolen at a goalie camp two years ago. I brought it in to show the kids and then stuck it in the pocket of my pants in the dressing room. Someone decided to rob our dressing room and a few people had money stolen, but it cost me my ring.
