Jules Dugal was the Canadiens’ coach for half a season in 1939, replacing Cecil Hart behind the team’s bench.
He posted a 9-6-3 record during his tenure.
The Canadiens qualified for the playoffs with a sixth place finish overall at the end of the season with 39 points.
Montreal, however, lost two games to one to the Detroit Red Wings in the first round of the playoffs.
Despite the team’s struggles, left winger Toe Blake won the league scoring title with 47 points, including 24 goals, in 48 games.
Blake was awarded the Hart Trophy and was also named to the NHL’s First All-Star Team.
At the end of the season, Dugal yielded his position behind the bench to Babe Siebert, though he remained the team’s general manager for the following season.
