Sylvio Mantha became the Canadiens’ coach in 1935 after 13 standout seasons as a Habs defenceman.
He was less successful, however, behind the bench than he was as a player, leading the Canadiens to 33 points, including 11 wins, in 48 games.
At the end of the 1935-36 season, Montreal missed the playoffs for the first time in 10 years.
Dismissed by the Canadiens, Mantha was subsequently hired by the Boston Bruins.
After only four games with his new team, he announced his retirement.
He went on to become a linesman and referee in the AHL and NHL, as well as a junior coach.
