NO. 23 RETIRED FOREVER
On February 23, 2008, Bob Gainey becomes the 14th player in Canadiens history to have his jersey retired when his No. 23 is raised to the Bell Centre rafters. Described as the most complete player in hockey by legendary Soviet coach Viktor Tikhonov in the late 1970s, Gainey makes a memorable entrance on his big night, hitting the ice in full equipment for one final lap around the ice. The prototypical defensive-forward, Gainey’s four Selke Trophies remain an NHL record.
