Grand moments

December 19th, 1917
WELCOME TO THE NHL
On December 19, 1917, all four teams in the newly formed National Hockey League saw action on opening night. The Canadiens crossed swords with the Senators at Ottawa’s Dey arena while the Montreal Wanderers and Toronto Blueshirts met at the Westmount Arena.

Former Quebec Bulldogs star, Joe Malone, made a statement in his debut. Playing his first game with the Canadiens, he finished the night with six points, including five goals, propelling the visiting team to a 7-4 victory. To this day, Malone remains one of only three NHL players to record a hat trick in his team’s inaugural game.
