Born as the Atlanta Flames (1972 to1980), the Calgary Flames entered the NHL in 1980-81. The team put up a 39-27-4 record in its debut season, earning a spot in the playoffs. The postseason run would last until the third round, when the Flames were eliminated by the Minnesota North Stars.

The Canadiens first met the Flames on November 25, 1980 at the Forum, a game that ended in a 5-4 loss.

Montreal and Calgary, Stanley Cup champions in 1989, have met twice in the playoffs, and both were in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Canadiens emerged victorious in five games in 1986 while the Flames edged Montreal in six games in 1989.
