The NHL edition of the Cleveland Barons resulted from the relocation of the California Golden Seals prior to the 1976-77 season, a move that did not change the troubled franchise’s difficulties on the ice or at the box office.
After winning only 47 of 160 regular season games while based in Cleveland the financially strapped team was merged with the Minnesota North Stars before the start of play in 1978-79.
The team first met on November 24th, 1976 with the visiting Canadiens skating to an easy 8-1 victory.
The Canadiens and Barons never met in the playoffs.
