The Cobalt Silver Kings, owned by mining magnate J. Ambrose O’Brien, began play in 1906-07 Temiskaming Professional Hockey League and folded in 1911 after playing all but one season in that loop. Their inaugural roster included future Canadiens stars Newsy Lalonde and Didier Pitre.
A founding member of the National Hockey Association in the fall of 1909, they spent a single season in the NHA before returning to the TPHL for their final campaign.
Cobalt’s first game against Montreal, on January 5th, 1910 was also the first game in Canadiens history as well as the NHA’s inaugural match. Tied at six goals apiece after regulation time, the Canadiens scored in overtime to come out on top of a 7-6 decision.
The teams did not meet in the playoffs.
