The Florida Panthers joined the NHL in 1993-94. That year, the club recorded the best inaugural season of any team in the league, finishing the campaign just one game under .500. In their third season, the Panthers reached the Stanley Cup Finals against the Colorado Avalanche.

The Canadiens and Panthers first met on November 10, 1993 at the Forum, with the Canadiens dropping a 3-1 decision.

Montreal and Florida, the Eastern Conference champions in 1996, have never faced off in the postseason.
