Formerly the Hamilton Tigers, the New York Americans joined the NHL in 1925-26 and spent the next seventeen seasons in the league, playing their final campaign in 1941-42 as the Brooklyn Americans.

Never a powerhouse, the first NHL team to call Madison Square Garden home enjoyed only three winning seasons and made the playoffs five times, reaching the semifinals in both 1936 and 1938.

The Canadiens and Americans faced off against each other for the first time on December 8, 1925 with Montreal winning by a 6-2 score.

The teams never met in postseason play.
