The New York Islanders when they made their NHL debut in 1973, becoming the third team from the Greater New York area after the Americans (1926 to 1942) and the Rangers (since 1927). Like most expansion teams, the Isles struggled in their inaugural campaign, closing out the season with a 12-60-6 record.

The Canadiens and Islanders first met on Long Island, on October 24, 1973, in a 4-3 win by Montreal.

The Habs and Islanders have squared off four times in the postseason, all in the Conference Semifinal. The Canadiens have won three of the series, their lone defeat coming in 1984. The Islanders have captured the Stanley Cup four times, all in consecutive years, from 1980 to 1983.
