After 16 years as the Winnipeg Jets, the franchise headed south to become the Phoenix Coyotes in 1996-97. The Coyotes went 38-37-7 in their first NHL season.
The Canadiens and Coyotes first faced off on October 28, 1996, when Montreal earned a 5-4 overtime victory at the Bell Centre. Just a few short days later, on November 3, 1996, the two teams met once again, this time in Phoenix, skating to a 4-4 tie.
With Phoenix calling the Western Conference home, and having never won a playoff series, the Canadiens and Coyotes have never met in the postseason.
