The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the NHL in 1967-68, when the league doubled from six to 12 teams.  The club compiled a 27-34-13 record in its first campaign.

The Canadiens were the guests of honor for the Penguins’ debut contest, spoiling the party with a 2-1 win in Pittsburgh.

While the Penguins have been around for many years, the two teams have met just once in the postseason.  Montreal beat Pittsburgh in six games in their first round clash in the spring of 1998.
