Becoming the first US team admitted to the Pacific Coast Hockey Association in 1914-15, the Portland Rosebuds posted winning records in all four of their PCHA campaigns.

After winning the league championship in their second season the Rosebuds became the first American team to play for the Stanley Cup, facing the NHA’s Montreal Canadiens for world hockey supremacy.

The first game between the teams was the opening game of the Stanley Cup finals on March 20, 1916. The Rosebuds won the opener 2-0 to take an early lead in the series.

Montreal and Portland’s only postseason meetings came in the 1916 Stanley Cup finals. The series went the full five games and ended with the Montreal Canadiens earning the first of 24 Stanley Cup titles.
