The Quebec Bulldogs joined the National Hockey Association in 1910, replacing the Cobalt Silver Kings for the loop’s second season and ending the schedule in last place in the five-team league.
Team captain, Joe Malone, led the way as the Bulldogs climbed to top spot in the NHA and then on to a Stanley Cup title in their second year of play, repeating both feats the following season.
Financial difficulties prevented the Bulldogs from taking part for the first two years the National Hockey League operated, with the team finally hitting the ice in 1919-20. Finishing last in their only NHL campaign, the Bulldogs returned the next fall as the Hamilton Tigers.
The Canadiens and Bulldogs first NHA contest, on December 7, 1910, saw Montreal take a 4-1 decision while in their initial NHL encounter on December 25, 1919 ended with the Canadiens finding a 12-5 victory in their Christmas stocking.
The teams never met in postseason play.
