The 1934-35 season was the only one to number the St. Louis Eagles among NHL teams. Formerly the money-losing Ottawa Senators, their year in Missouri was a last-ditch effort at financial solvency.
Travel costs and dwindling fan support combined with a last-place finish in the Canadian Division forced the Eagles to cease operations. The league reclaimed the franchise and distributed the St. Louis players among the eight surviving NHL clubs.
It would be over 30 years before the NHL returned to St. Louis.
The initial meeting of the Canadiens and the Eagles was held at The Forum on December 15, 1934, and ended with the teams deadlocked at a goal each.
Montreal and the St. Louis Eagles never met in the playoffs.
