Made up of soldiers from a unit also known as the Northern Fusiliers, the 228th Battalion was an NHA entry for the first half of the 1916-17 season. Wearing khaki –colored uniforms they were a popular drawing card around the league, winning six of their ten games and placing third in the midseason standings before being posted overseas.

The Canadiens played their first game against the 228th Battalion on January 10th, 1917, winning a 6-1 decision over their visiting military foes.
