The Toronto Blueshirts joined the National Hockey Association to begin the 1912-13 season. They would enjoy only one winning winter but it took them to a Stanley Cup victory in 1914.
A change of ownership brought the argumentative and litigious Eddie Livingston to the NHA owners’ table before the 1915-16 season. Halfway through 1916-17 the league suspended the Blueshirts for the balance of the season.
In the offseason they decided to form a new league that would exclude Livingston from its ranks. It was called the National Hockey League.
The Canadiens and Blueshirts played each other for the first time on Christmas Day, 1912, with Montreal opening their season with a 9-5 victory.
The teams met in two-game, total-goal series after tying for the top spot in the 1913-14 regular season. Each team won their home game with Toronto outscoring the Habs 6-2 on the way to the Stanley Cup.
