The Washington Capitals joined the NHL in 1974-75 and struggled mightily in their initial campaign, winning just eight games and concluding the season with an 8-67-5 record.
It wasn’t until the Capitals’ sophomore season that the Canadiens first faced the new franchise. Montreal picked up a 3-0 win over the Caps on October 31, 1975 in Washington.
While the Capitals, who made it to the Stanley Cup Final in 1997-98, have been around for many years, the Canadiens and the Caps only met once in the playoffs in 2010, where Montreal won the No. 1 seed Capitals in seven games in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.
