Alex Smart signed a contract with the Canadiens on Feb. 1, 1943. He played eight games with the Habs in the 1942-43 season. He scored five goals and added two assists during that, his only stint in the NHL. On Jan. 14, 1943, Smart made NHL history as the only player to have ever scored a hat trick in his first game in the League. As of today, Réal Cloutier (Quebec – 1979), Fabian Brunnstrom (Dallas – 2008) and Derek Stephan (NY Rangers – 2010) remain the only other players to ever have accomplished the feat.
