Hailing from Madison, Wisconsin, defenseman Barry Richter was Hartford’s second-round pick and the 32nd overall selection at the 1988 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the New York Rangers in April of 1996. Before signing as a free agent with the Canadiens on Aug. 20, 1999, Richter had already played one season for the Boston Bruins as well as another for the New York Islanders. He played 23 games with the Habs during their 1999-00 campaign, and another two – his last in the league – in 2000-01. He continued his playing career in Europe until 2007-08.
