Hailing from Barrie, Ontario, Garry Monahan was the first draft pick in the history of the NHL, selected by the Canadiens during the league’s inaugural entry draft in 1963. He made his debut with the Habs during their 1967-68 campaign. Monahan played a total of 14 games with the Canadiens over the course of which he recorded one point. He was traded to the Detroit Red Wings on Jun. 6, 1969 along with Doug Rider, in exchange for Peter Mahovlich and Bart Crashley. He also enjoyed stints with the Los Angeles Kings, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Vancouver Canucks before leaving the NHL for Japan in 1979.
