Hailing from Randolph, Ontario, defenseman Howard McNamara was one of the most imposing players of his era, tipping the scales at 240 pounds. He enjoyed two separate stints with the Canadiens, split by time spend in the army during World War I. In his first stint with the Habs in 1915-16, it became quickly apparent that he wouldn’t be one to shy away from the game’s physical nature, logging 119 penalty minutes. Starting the campaign as the Canadiens’ captain, he led the team to their first-ever Stanley Cup Championship. Following time spent serving his country, McNamara returned to the Habs in 1919-20 for 10 more games, recording one goal. His brother Howard McNamara also played for the Canadiens during their 1916-17 campaign.
