Hailing from Charlesbourg, Quebec, defenseman Jean-Philippe Côté was the Maples Leafs’ ninth-round pick and the 265th overall selection at the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He signed as a free agent with the Canadiens on Aug. 19, 2004 and made his NHL debut against the Ottawa Senators on Nov. 29. He played a total of eight games with the Habs during their 2005-06 campaign, recording four penalty minutes. Jean-Philippe is the son of former Nordiques forward, Alain Côté, whose disallowed goal against the Canadiens in the 1987 playoffs remains a critical moment in the Quebec-Montreal rivalry.
