FROM DAY ONE, JEFF HACKETT BROUGHT EXPERIENCE AND STABILITY TO THE CANADIENS’ NET, WHILE MENTORING THE TEAM’S YOUNG GOALIES.
Jeff Hackett got to work immediately upon joining the Canadiens in 1998-99. He took part in 53 games from mid-November through the end of the regular season, posting 24 wins over that time. The extensive Montreal media coverage made quite an impression on Hackett, who compared it to the publicity that NBA superstar Michael Jordan drew in Chicago.A junior standout with the Oshawa Generals, Hackett was selected 37th overall by the New York Islanders in the second round of the 1987 Entry Draft. He continued his stellar play with the AHL's Springfield Indians over the course of the next two seasons, even appearing in a few NHL games. He also claimed the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as AHL playoff MVP in 1989-90, the season the Indians won the Calder Cup.
The London, Ontario, native was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the 1991 expansion draft, sharing goaltending duties with Arturs Irbe and former Canadiens goalie Brian Hayward. After suffering through the growing pains of two seasons with an expansion team, Hackett was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in the summer of 1993.
Hackett spent the next four and a half seasons with Chicago, where he refined his game and developed a reputation for consistency. Blessed with a cool disposition, the goalie made his way to Montreal in November 1998 along with Eric Weinrich, Alain Nasreddine and a fourth round pick in a deal that sent Jocelyn Thibault, Dave Manson and Brad Brown to the Blackhawks.
Over the next four seasons, Hackett shared the Habs’ goaltending load with Jose Theodore. A series of injuries, particularly to his hand and his shoulder, as well as the prodigious play of the young Theodore led the team’s coaching staff to use Hackett in a backup role, a challenge that the veteran goalie met head on.
In January 2003, the development of another promising young goalie within the Canadiens’ organization, Mathieu Garon, as well as Hackett’s track record of injuries, forced the team’s hand. He was traded to Boston as part of a three-way deal involving San Jose. After appearing in 18 games with the Bruins through the end of the season, Hackett signed a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers and played one more year before hanging up his skates in 2004.
He returned to the NHL in 2006 in a different role when he was hired as a goalie coach by the Colorado Avalanche.
