MATHIEU SCHNEIDER LED THE CANADIENS OFFENSIVE ATTACK IN THE EARLY 1990S WITH HIS BLISTERING SLAPSHOT.
A smooth-skating offensive defenseman with one of the NHL’s hardest slap shots, Mathieu Schneider was one of the Canadiens’ key performers over the course of his six seasons in Montreal. The New York City native was drafted 44th overall by the Canadiens in the third round of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft. Schneider played for the OHL’s Cornwall Royals and the American junior team in 1987-88, appearing in a few games with the Habs as well. After another full season with Cornwall, the offensive defenseman split the 1989-90 season between Montreal and its farm team in Sherbrooke.
He stuck with the Canadiens for good in 1990-91 and made an immediate impact as the team’s highest-scoring defenseman, notching 30 points in 69 games. In 1992-93, he helped lead the Habs all the way through the playoffs and saw his name engraved on to the Stanley Cup for the first and only time in his career.
Schneider had his best season in Montreal in 1993-94, with 20 goals and 32 assists for 52 points. The following season, the Habs needed to bolster their offense up front so they dealt Schneider, Kirk Muller and Craig Darby to the Islanders in exchange for center Pierre Turgeon and defenseman Vladimir Malakhov.
After two seasons with the Islanders, Schneider moved on to the Toronto Maple Leafs late in 1995-96. Schneider won a gold medal with the United States in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. He went on to play for the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings and Detroit Red Wings. In the summer of 2007, he signed with the Anaheim Ducks. Just before the start of the 2008-09 regular season, the Ducks dealt Schneider to the Atlanta Thrashers.
Chosen to play in three Olympics and a two-time participant in the NHL All-Star Game, Schneider reached the 1,000-game milestone in 2005.
