Mathieu Descoteaux was the Edmonton Oilers’ first-round pick and the 19th overall selection at the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. He was traded to Montreal on Mar. 9, 2000, along with the Christian Laflamme, in exchange for Igor Ulanov and Alain Nasreddine. Descoteaux made his NHL debut with the Canadiens on Feb. 11, 2001, recording one assist against the Buffalo Sabres, before scoring his first goal during his next appearance on Feb. 21, 2001 against the Vancouver Canucks’ Dan Cloutier. He went on to play three more games with the Habs that season – his last three in the NHL, choosing instead to continue his career in Europe.
