THE FIRST RUSSIAN PLAYER TO SUIT UP FOR THE CANADIENS, OLEG PETROV ENJOYED HIS BEST SEASON IN 2000-01, FINISHING TIED FOR THE TEAM LEAD WITH 47 POINTS.
Few people thought that Oleg Petrov would ever play in the NHL. A member of the Russian team at the 1991 World Junior Hockey Championship, his talent was never questioned, with his spectacular quickness and precise passing, but there were plenty of concerns about his lack of physical development.Nonetheless, Oleg Petrov enjoyed a successful career with the Habs, taking part in more than 350 games.
After three seasons with the CSKA Moscow team, Petrov made the Canadiens lineup in 1992-93 and appeared in one playoff game, taking part in the franchise’s NHL-leading 24th Stanley Cup.
Over the course of the next three seasons, the Moscow native shuttled between Montreal and the Canadiens’ farm team in Fredericton. Unable to establish a regular spot in the lineup, the 5-foot-9, 161-pound forward spent the next three seasons playing in Switzerland.
In 1999, Petrov took a second run at the NHL and rejoined the Canadiens. An up-and-down 1999-2000 season saw him once again move between Montreal and the farm team, now located in Quebec City. He finally broke through in 2000-01 with 17 goals and 47 points in 81 games, tying Saku Koivu as the team’s leading scorer.
The following season, he scored a career-high 24 goals and recorded 41 points, helping the Canadiens reach the second round of the playoffs. After a difficult 2002-03 campaign, though, Petrov was traded to Nashville, where he played the final 17 games of his NHL career.
