Zarley Zalapski was the Pittsburgh Penguins’ first-round pick and the fourth overall selection at the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. An offensively-minded defenseman, the Edmonton native played for the Penguins, Hartford Whalers and Calgary Flames during the course of his first 10 seasons in the league. He also took part in the NHL All-Star Game in 1993. Zalapski was traded by the Flames to the Canadiens on Feb. 1, 1998, along with Jonas Hoglund in exchange for Valeri Bure and the Habs’ fourth-round pick (Shaun Sutter) in the 1998 draft. Zalapski played 34 games with the Habs – six of them coming in the playoffs – during which he recorded one goal and six assists. He also played for the Philadelphia Flyers over the course of his NHL career.
