Where are they now? Stephan Lebeau

Where are they now? Stephan Lebeau
The Canadiens didn’t pile up 100 years of history without the blood, sweat and tears of the over 750 players to have ever worn the uniform. From the likes of Donald Audette to Zarley Zalapski, there are former Habs scattered all over the world. Although many hardcore Canadiens fans can rattle off the career accomplishments of hundreds of their old heroes, the question remains: what are these guys up to today? Today’s guest: Stephan Lebeau.

Where do you live now?
In Sherbrooke, in the Eastern Townships.

What are you doing now?
A few things, actually. I’m running the hockey program at Bishop College School in Lennoxville. It’s a private English high school.  My work with that runs from mid-November through mid-February. We have three boys’ teams and one for girls.  I work with four other coaches and we take care of their development, throughout hockey.

I also do some work in the media as a regular contributor to Radio-Energie in Sherbrooke as well as working with Radio-Canada.

How many times per year do you lace up the skates?
As a coach, I’m on the ice pretty often.  As a player, that’s a different story. Ever since I retired, I’ve really slowed down and even stopped for a while. This year, I started playing again once to twice per week in a garage league with some friends.

Have you kept in touch with any former teammates?
I’m not really in touch with any of them on a regular basis but I do see them from time to time when I’m at the Bell Centre for some television work. Otherwise, I’ll get together occasionally with guys who live in the area, like Jocelyn Thibault and Yanic Perreault.

How many Canadiens games do you watch per year?
I watch all of them.  If I can’t watch it, I’ll tape it and watch it later. Given that I have to comment on the game, I need to be aware of what’s going on in the NHL, especially with the Canadiens. At the same time, hockey is still a passion of mine and I love analyzing it and commenting on it.

When was the last time you were in Montreal to watch a game?
I’m there probably about 10 times per year, either in the stands or in the press box.

Who is your favorite player on the current roster?
I don’t really have a favorite but one that’s really caught me by surprise is Maxim Lapierre.  Seeing how he’s progressed this year really makes me happy.  If I had to pick a favorite, though, I’d go with Alex Tanguay. He’s a finesse guy and makes some great passes. I have a great appreciation for his smarts on the ice.

Of all you’ve collected and still have from your years with the Canadiens, what’s your favorite?
I have a collection of hockey sticks from NHL stars. I’d have to say that my favorite stick, even though it’s not from a Canadiens player, is the one from Wayne Gretzky. Actually, I have two from him. He was my idol growing up and I’m really happy to have those sticks.

Where do you keep your Stanley Cup ring?
It’s in a safe at my house.  Occasionally, I’ll take it out for special occasions. When I’m speaking to kids at a conference or invited as an honorary president, I wear it to share with hockey fans.
